colors / help / bots

Hi,

I am watching this site with great interest as a game player, wife of a game programmer, and ex-Puzzle Pirate. I found you after my husband forwarded a gamasutra article to me, and I tried to play some of the games. I was only able to try Atlantis, due to not enough players on the other two to start a game. I offer the following comments, along with my best wishes for success:

1) The colors being used on the main page and game waiting rooms are really bothering me. The lettering is hard to read on the title bar, and the lurid greens and yellows in the background need toning down. It's a silly thing to complain about, but I think most people notice that first.

2) When there's time, please ask developers to add a little more help for the games.

3) To facilitate playing, more bots are needed, so I can try everything.

Sorry for stating the obvious.

Thanks!

I've refrained from commenting until now on this. (Mostly due to aqua is my least favorite colour in the entire spectrum.) The site does seem a little harsh on the eyes at times. Bright of everything. I think it might be more palateable if a more uniform theme where there instead of this orgy of bright colour were everywhere. For example, that title image up there has yellow font/green shadow, red font/yellow shadow, yellow font/green shadow, and white font with green shadow. Too many different colours just look blah to me.

Really though, in web design, no matter what theme you pick, someone will think its repulsive. Best is just to make sure everything is readable. (The "Home | About | ..." would prolly be better as black on that light green background).

Enough tart for me though, I've designed a few site themes before, and know how much of a pain it is.

Unlike any other multiplayer game site on the net, (and also unlike puzzle pirates), the games are this site weren't paid for by a salary. Two of them that I know of were made by Jack, and the rest were entries in a programming competition. A lot of the games that will find their way here will just be by hobbyist programmers working in their spare time, or a group of hobbyists working on a game that is open-sourced. As such its up to individual programmers to update the game (or open-source it so other people can work on it). It isn't anything that three-rings can tell anyone to do.

This approach actually has quite a few benifits. Unlike other games, if the original developer stops adding to it, someone else can pick up the captains hat and keep the game going. It should be interesting. =)

As to more bots, from what I've seen the bot functionality was just added to the toolbox, then Jack wrote up a quick ai script for Atlantis. Since Jack has released all his code, the other developers should be able to see how its done, and make their own ai accordingly. Due to the above its just a matter of them, or someone else getting around it. This site is still very young, and may take a little while to blosom fully. (Aww, like a little garden). Once it has taken root more, there will probably be more threads about the individual games, with their individual developers most likely taking active discussion of what they're working on.

Re: colors

I agree that the site colors are garish and shocking, but I find that I kind of like it, particularly the burnt-orange flowers and light red 2up-bird. However, it is possibly true that it will turn off more people than it will turn on, and that's unfortunate.

Re: colors

I was trying something striking and new to go with the bold idea of the site. I am still concerned that the design may be too focused in its appeal. It's a good point that someone will always not like it, but for how much I like it, I'm not sure it has broad appeal. I don't want to distill down to boring, but it's likely I've gone to too specific a taste.

Whenever I talk about it, I get very worried. Then I actually look at it and I'm really happy with it. Then I leave and I get worried again.

Re: colors

Looking again, I remember that the text over the background here couldn't be set light without setting other text light that shouldn't be. That prompted the background pattern here to be lightened, which I really don't like. Also, the color fields here in the forums aren't finalized (particularly that blue in the first post). Is it particularly disruptive in the forums, and are these the greatest issues you're having?

Re: colors / help / bots

If I could change anything, it would be the blue background of the thread's first post. I'm not sure if I would say it was disruptive, but I would welcome a lighter shade.

In general, though, the site is so unique and striking it really makes you feel as though you're someplace special. Very nice.
